Traveling by Air India? There are a few things you should know about this airline to make your flight stress-free and comfortable. Here is a guide with all information you need to know about flying with Air India. This will simplify your travel fear and get you ready for the memorable journey ahead.

Air India Baggage Allowance:

An Air India passenger can bring one bag and one personal item such as a laptop bag or handbag as a carry-on. These bags should fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. There are some fixed baggage allowance policies while you travel on Air India. But, the allowance may vary depending on the travel conditions such as fare type and the class you are traveling to.

Air India Carry-on Baggage Allowance to/from the USA:

Economy Class: Baggage dimensions for economy class are Height 55 cm (22 inches) + Length 35 cm (14 inches) + Width 25 cm (10 inches) with maximum of 115 cm. 

As an economy class passenger, you are allowed to bring only 1 piece of hand baggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg.

For baggage, more than 8 kg USD 40/Kg (GST extra) charges will be applicable for an international journey from USA to India.

The maximum hand baggage weight after paying excess charges must not exceed the weight of 10 kg including Duty-Free items.

Free Personal items allowed as a Carry on are:

  • An overcoat 
  • Blanket
  • Camera
  • Infant’s feed
  • A Collapsible wheelchair 
  • A Walking stick.
  • An umbrella
  • Medicines
  • A Laptop

Business / First Class Baggage Allowance:

Hand baggage allowance for First and Business Class is the same as the economy while the weight should not exceed 12b kg. If the hand baggage weighs more than 12 kg it will not be allowed in the cabin and has to be checked.

Baggage Allowance for Infant: Infants in all classes would be eligible for a baggage allowance of 1 piece of the bag with a maximum weight of 10 kg.

Powder like Items in Carry-on: 

Medically prescribed powder-like substances, baby formula, and human remains of 12oz (350ml) or larger may be transported as carry-on. Make sure these powder-like substances should be properly sealed with a Secure Tamper Evident Bag.

Checked Baggage allowance on USA to India flights: 

Economy Class:

In economy class passengers are allowed to carry 2 pieces of bags of 23 kg/ 50 pounds each. Each bag should not exceed the linear dimension of 62 inches while the total dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both pieces should not exceed 273 cm (107 inches).

Business/First Class:

In the Business and First class of Air India passengers have the same checked baggage allowance. You can bring 2 pieces of bags i.e 32kh / 70 pound each. The sum of all the 3 dimensions of each piece must not exceed 62 inches or 158 cm.

Oversize Baggage in Air India:

If your baggage does not follow the criteria of the allowed mentioned dimensions then it falls under the category of the oversize bag. The following chart represents the oversize baggage fee concept for traveling between USA and India:

Special Items:

If you are carrying a fragile or special item then you can book an extra seat to keep that item. You have to follow some restrictions that are mentioned below:

The weight of the item should be less than 75 kg.

The items should be packaged or covered properly to avoid injury to other customers.

The item should be secured by a seat belt to avoid shifting.

Must not contain dangerous goods.

Sports/Music/Other Equipment:

Carriages of bulky, fragile, or larger musical equipment are not allowed to carry as cabin baggage if flying between USA and India. Passengers are suggested to pack these items as checked baggage. Fragile items should be labeled as “FRAGILE” by the Air India check-in agent. However, the musical instrument is subject to security clearances for carriage in the cabin.

Restricted Items:

There are some articles that may be considered dangerous and thus are restricted to carry.

Items that are restricted as cabin baggage:

Sharp Objects:

Box Cutters, Ice Axes, Knives, Meat Cleavers, Razor-type blades, utility knives, razor blades not in a cartridge, excluding safety razors and Sword.

Sporting Goods:

Baseball Bats, Bows and Arrows, Cricket Bats, Golf Clubs, Hockey Sticks, Lacrosse Sticks, Pool Cues, Ski Poles, and Spear Guns.

Guns and Firearms:

Pellet Guns, Ammunition, Compressed Air Guns, Firearms, Parts of Guns and Firearms, Realistic Replicas of Firearms, and Starter pistols

Tools:

Crowbars, Axes, hatchets, Cattle Prods, Hammers, Drills, Saws, Screwdrivers, Wrenches, and Pliers.

Self Defense Items:

Mace/Pepper Spray, Black Jacks, Brass Knuckles, Martial Arts Weapons, Night Sticks, Martial Arts/Self Defense Items, and Stun Guns.

Prohibited Items in Air India:

Some items that are not allowed to be carried as a carry-on as well as checked baggage. These are mentioned below:

Explosive Material:

Material such as Gun Powder, Flare Guns, Gun Lighters, Blasting caps, Dynamite, Fireworks, Flares, Hand Grenades, Plastic Explosives, and Realistic Replicas of Explosives.

Compressed Gases:

Flammable, non-flammable, and poisonous gases such as Butane, Oxygen, Liquid Nitrogen, and Aqualung cylinders. 

Flammable Items:

Fuels, Gasoline, Gas Torches, Lighter Fluid, Strike anywhere matches, and Thinner.

Oxidizing Materials:

Items like bleaching powder and peroxides.

Radio-active materials:

Mercury, acids, and alkalis.

Air India Lost, Delayed, and Damaged Baggage: 

Delayed Baggage:

If your baggage is not received at the destination then it is suggested contact Air India personnel and provide the details to them.

Lost Baggage:

If your baggage is not received within 21 days then it is considered lost. After 21 days you can claim the compensation after providing the necessary baggage details.

Damaged Baggage:

In case you receive the damaged bag file the complaint to the Air India personnel before leaving the airport. After assessment of your bag, they will tell if you are eligible for the claim or not.
